Climate mobility, climate-induced migration and forced displacement, is growing concern in Africa. Despite contributing less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Africa suffers disproportionately from the effects of climate change, including floods, droughts, landslides, and heatwaves. In 2022, the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI), in partnership with organizations such as the UNICEF, AU, YOUNGO, MYCP and RESILIENT40 launched the ACMI Youth Forum to empower youth to address these challenges and ensure meaningful youth inclusion in policy and practice. The mission of the Youth Forum is to provide a platform for youth to address climate mobility and the challenges faced by climate migrants and displaced communities in Africa.

Now, the ACMI Youth Forum and the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) Solutions Lab are launching a call for applications for youth-led climate mobility solutions/projects from Africa to receive funding of up to $5,000 per project. With funding support from the Robert Bosch Stiftung this new funding arrangement for youth-led climate mobility solutions/projects has been designed by the youth for the youth. We believe in harnessing the potential of young people and breaking the barriers to African youth access to climate finance, to create innovative solutions that promote climate resilience to enable people positive adaptation journeys amidst the climate crisis.

What Are We Looking For?

We are seeking passionate and dedicated youth organizations, groups, and individuals with innovative projects that focus on climate resilience in disaster-prone areas to address both rapid and slow onset climate events. We are interested in projects that address the needs of climate migrants and individuals displaced by climate change (people on the move), refugees and those at risk of displacement. The solutions/proposals should align with at least one of the following thematic areas:

  • Addressing loss and damage
  • Climate literacy in disaster prone and vulnerable communities
  • Storytelling and art for climate awareness
  • Ecosystem restoration in disaster prone areas
  • Green jobs in vulnerable communities and for IDPs, refugees, migrants, and youth
  • Policy and advocacy

Who Can Apply?
We encourage applications from individuals or youth-led organizations and groups where the majority of members are between the ages of 18 and 35. If you are an individual or group without a registered organization, we recommend collaborating with a registered youth organization to submit your proposal. We also welcome applications from other marginalized groups, including disabled individuals. Up to 5 projects will be selected through this process.

REMINDER: To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 18-35 years on the application deadline date to be considered. Also, please note that you must be from Africa in order to be considered. Migrant and displaced youth living in Africa or who were born in Africa are strongly encouraged to apply.
